SAFCAM participated in a very important meeting of our Africa-Madagascar Region. It was the “Team Visit” which is held every six years in each region of the congregation. This meeting took place at Gatenga Youth Centre in Kigali (Rwanda) from February 19 to 23, 2024. At the meeting were the Rector Major – Cardinal Angel Fernandez Artime, the convener, the Vicar of the Rector Major – Fr. Stefano Martoglio, the General Councillors of the sectors – Fathers Ivo Coelho (Formation), Miguel Angel Garcia (Youth Ministry), Alfredo Maravilla (Missions), Gildasio Dos Santos (Social Communication), Brother Jean-Paul Muller (Economy) and the Regional Councillor – Father Alphonse Owoudou. Other confreres were also present to give input: Father Andrea Bozzolo the Vice Chancellor of the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome (UPS) and Father Juan Playa, in charge of the animation of the Salesian Family. This meeting was attended by confreres from the 15 Salesian Provinces of the Region, that is to say: all the Provincials and the members of their councils. The confreres who provide regional services were also present, notably the Secretary of CIVAM, two confreres from Don Bosco Tech Africa and two confreres from SAFCAM.
The overall visit began on February 19 with the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Kibeho, Mother of the Word. At the place of the visit of the Virgin Mary, after receiving information about the apparitions, the Eucharist was celebrated and transmitted by Radio Maria in Rwanda (here is the link: https://youtu.be/IFooTbqERAs). The same day, the confreres had the opportunity to visit the Salesian Novitiate in Rango (Butare – Huye).
On February 20, the work itself began after a moment of prayer led by SAFCAM. The confreres worked in groups according to the sectors of activity of the congregation. Then, Fr. Andrea Bozzolo spoke about the synergy between Africa and the UPS. Fr Juan Playa spoke about the reality of the Salesian Family. In the afternoon, the Rector Major arrived and received a warm welcome and later addressed the assembly of confreres. In the meantime, Fr. Alphonse Owoudou (Regional) presented the reality of the Africa-Madagascar Region. After the intervention of the Rector Major, Father Alfredo Maravilla spoke about missionary animation.
On February 21, it was Father Ivo Coelho who took the floor to speak about the formation animation. After him, Brother Jean-Paul Muller spoke to the assembly on the state of the economy of the congregation. The two speakers also allowed group work. In the evening of that day, there was a meeting with the Archbishop of Kigali, Cardinal Antoine Kambanda.
On February 22, Fr. Miguel Angel Garcia spoke about youth ministry and also invited group sharing. In the afternoon of that day, a visit was organized to the Genocide Memorial in Kigali with a moment of prayer for the victims. This was followed by a visit to two Salesian houses in Kimihurura (Kigali): the provincial house, the schools (nursery, primary and secondary) as well as the parish of Mary Help of Christians. In the evening, the creation of the regional website was presented and the Regional Councillor for Africa and Madagascar, Fr Alphonse Owoudou informed the confreres about the preparation of the 29th General Chapter of the Congregation. To end the day, a meeting took place with the Provincials of the Region.
On February 23, Fr. Gildasio Dos Santos spoke about Social Communication and gave some questions for sharing in groups. After him, Father Stefano Martoglio put forward thoughts concerning the creation of two regions in the African continent. This gave rise to another important sharing for the Provinces. At the same time, the confreres reflected on the impact of the Team Visit and were invited to formulate three challenges in their respective Provinces. In the evening, the Rector Major gave important general conclusions to end the Team Visit. Then, the Apostolic Nuncio came to greet the assembly of confreres, while participating in prayer. The meeting of the Team Visit closed with a fraternal evening where young people and confreres presented songs and other elements of entertainment. The entire meeting of these five days was very well organized by the Vice-Province of the AGL.

SAFCAM a participé à une rencontre très importante de notre Région Afrique-Madagascar. C’était la « Visite d’Ensemble » qui se tient tous les six ans dans chaque région de la congrégation. Notre rencontre s’est déroulée au Centre des Jeunes de Gatenga à Kigali (Rwanda) du 19 au 23 février 2024. Au rendez-vous étaient le Recteur Majeur – le Cardinal Angel Fernandez Artime, le Vicaire du Recteur Majeur – le P. Stefano Martoglio, les Conseils Généraux des secteurs – les Pères Ivo Coelho (Formation), Miguel Angel Garcia (Pastorale des Jeunes), Alfredo Maravilla (Missions), Gildasio Dos Santos (Communication sociale), le Frère Jean-Paul Muller (Economie) et le Conseiller régional – le Père Alphonse Owoudou. D’autres confrères étaient aussi présents pour donner une intervention : le Père Andrea Bozzolo, Vice-chancelier de l’Université Pontificale Salésienne (UPS) et le Père Juan Playa pour la Famille salésienne.
A cette rencontre participaient des confrères venant des 15 Provinces salésiennes de la Région, c’est-à-dire : tous les Provinciaux et les membres de leurs conseils. Les confrères qui assurent un service régional étaient également présents, notamment le Secrétaire de la CIVAM, deux confrères de Don Bosco Tech Afrique et deux confrères de SAFCAM.
La visite d’ensemble a commencé le 19 février avec le pèlerinage au sanctuaire de Notre-Dame de Kibeho, Mère du Verbe. Sur le lieu de la visite de la Vierge Marie, après avoir reçu des informations sur les apparitions, l’Eucharistie a été célébrée et transmise par Radio Maria au Rwanda (voici le lien : https://youtu.be/IFooTbqERAs). Le même jour, les confrères ont eu l’occasion de visiter le Noviciat salésien à Rango (Butare – Huye).
Le 20 février, les travaux proprement dits commençaient après un moment de prière animé par SAFCAM. Les confrères ont travaillé en groupes selon les secteurs d’animation de la congrégation. Ensuite, le P. Andrea Bozzolo de l’UPS a parlé de la synergie entre l’Afrique et l’UPS. Le P. Juan Playa est intervenu sur la réalité de la Famille salésienne. Dans l’après-midi, le Recteur Majeur est arrivé et recevait un chaleureux accueil et plus tard, il s’est adressé à l’assemblée des confrères. Entre-temps, le P. Alphonse Owoudou (Régional) a présenté la réalité de la Région Afrique-Madagascar. Après l’intervention du Recteur Majeur, le P. Alfredo Maravilla a parlé de l’animation missionnaire.
Le 21 février, c’est le P. Ivo Coelho qui a pris la parole pour s’exprimer sur l’animation de la formation. Après lui, le Frère Jean-Paul Muller a entretenu l’assemblée sur l’état de l’économie de la congrégation. Les deux intervenants ont aussi permis un travail en groupes. Le soir de ce jour, il y a eu la rencontre avec l’Archevêque de Kigali, le Cardinal Antoine Kambanda.
Le 22 février, le P. Miguel Angel Garcia a parlé de la pastorale des jeunes et a invité également à un partage en groupes. Dans l’après-midi de ce jour, une visite était organisée au Mémorial du génocide à Kigali avec un moment de prière pour les victimes. Ceci était suivi par une visite à deux maisons salésiennes à Kimihurura (Kigali) : la maison provinciale, les écoles (maternelle, primaire et secondaire) ainsi que la paroisse de Marie Auxiliatrice. Dans la soirée, la création du site web régional a été présenté et le P. Régional a informé les confrères sur la préparation du 29ième Chapitre Général de la Congrégation. Pour finir ce jour, une réunion a eu lieu avec les Provinciaux de la Région.
Le 23 février, le P. Gildasio Dos Santos a parlé de la Communication sociale et a donné quelques questions pour un partage en groupes. Après lui, le P. Stefano Martoglio a avancé des réflexions concernant la création de deux régions dans le continent africain. Ceci a donné lieu à un autre partage important pour les Provinces. En même temps, les confrères réfléchissaient sur l’impact de la visite d’ensemble et étaient invités à formuler trois défis dans leur Provinces respectives. Dans la soirée, le Recteur Majeur a donné des conclusions générales importantes pour terminer la visite d’ensemble. Ensuite, le Nonce Apostolique est venu saluer l’assemblée des confrères, tout en participant à la prière. La rencontre de la visite d’ensemble a été clôturée avec une soirée fraternelle où des jeunes et des confrères ont présenté des chants et d’autres éléments de détente.
Toute la rencontre de ces cinq jours était très bien organisée par la Vice-Province de l’AGL.
