The international women’s day was celebrated everywhere on March 8th. This year, the day was celebrated under the theme “investing in women : accelerate progress”. In Kamuli the day was characterised by various activities organised to identify, celebrate and increase the visibility of women’s achievements. It was our community (salesian community of Kamuli) that organised the special celebration of this day.
The celebration of international women’s day in Saint Joseph Kamuli was well organised and everyone did their level best to make it a colourful event. The day started with the students and guests marching around Kamuli town. During the march we were animated by the Brass band of our oratory and the security agents (police officers) accompanied us to ensure security and order on the road. After the march, which took around two hours, we came back to the community where the celebration was to take place and those who had prepared some presentations started to entertain us as we listened to the speeches about this day. The presentations were mostly praising the achievements of women. There were traditional and modern dances, acrobatic performances and music from the Brass band. In the speeches the main point was to appreciate the women and encouraging them. The chief guest was MUTESI Gloria from PLAN international (Kamuli office). In her speech she talked about the history of the day and she told the women and girls to be confident because they are able and the history showed that a woman can do what a man can do; even sometimes she can do it better. She encouraged the girls who had agreed to join the technical school because people are more likely to think of a technical school as a school for boys only. After her speech the following items on the program were : taking a group photo and lunch for all. After lunch we continued the different games organised for this day.
