From 10th to 14th December, the Don Bosco Namugongo Community in Kampala hosted the Salesian Annual Youth Forum/Camp, a vibrant gathering of young people inspired by the Salesian spirit of Don Bosco. The camp was held under the theme “DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU: Believers Free to Serve,” drawn from the Strenna of the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco. This theme invited young people to listen attentively to God’s voice like Mother Mary and to respond generously in freedom, faith, and service
The forum brought together young people from various Salesian communities, namely Palabek, Gulu Atede, Kamuli, Bombo, and Namugongo, alongside young participants from the Focolare Movement. This rich diversity fostered a strong sense of communion, shared faith, and fraternity among the participants.
The camp program was guided by dedicated facilitators who addressed the challenges and aspirations of today’s youth.
Rev. Fr. Frédéric Murindangabo, sdb, Vice Provincial of the AGL Province and Youth Ministry Delegate offered guidance that rooted the theme of the camp in the Salesian mission and encouraged young people to live as responsible believers, free to serve society and the Church.
Rev. Fr. Pascal Shauri, sdb, Rector of Namugongo Community, warmly welcomed the participants and continuously accompanied them.
Rev. Fr. Lazar Arasu, sdb from the Gulu community, led a compelling session on addiction, helping young people understand its causes, effects, and the importance of self-control and support systems.
Mrs Ronah Mbabazi, a mother of four, delivered an impactful talk on life skills and leadership, challenging young people to fight against comfort zones, noting that “comfort is the first killer of success.”
Mr. Emmanuel Ssentongo, Deputy Head Teacher of Makerere College School, Mulawa Campus, echoed concerns on addiction and depression among teenagers, particularly highlighting the dangers of unhealthy relationships, cyberbullying, and misuse of social media.
Dr. Rosaria, a devoted member of the Focolare Movement, showed exceptional care for the younger participants. Through the rosary, games and songs, she nurtured their spiritual growth.
Miss Dorothy, the overall seer and head of hygiene, addressed self-esteem, leadership development, and the challenges faced by young people in pursuing leadership careers.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Musagala, sdb, animated Lectio Divina, meditation, and Gospel sharing, helping participants to deepen their understanding of the Word of God and apply it to daily life.
Rev. Fr. Jonathan Ayaku, sdb, guided the youth through Gospel reflections, Lectio Divina, and Eucharistic celebrations.
Rev. Fr. Semakula Henry, sdb, the Chief Organizer, Overseer, and Host, coordinated all aspects of the camp with dedication and enthusiasm, ensuring its smooth and successful execution.
The camp was marked by a Pilgrimage of Faith to the Uganda Martyrs Shrine at Namugongo on Friday 12th. At the shrine, the Sacrament of Reconciliation was celebrated. The Holy Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr. Ubaldino, sdb.
The camp joyfully concluded with a campfire on Saturday night, filled with creativity and presentations from the young people. Songs, drama, testimonies, and reflections showcased the talents of the participants.
On Sunday, 14th December, the forum climaxed with a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by Rev Fr Frédéric Murindangabo – vice provincial AGL Province, attended by many Christians and parents. The faithful expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Salesians for organizing such a meaningful Catholic youth camp that nurtures faith, leadership and responsible citizenship among young people.
The Salesian Annual Youth Forum/Camp at Don Bosco Namugongo was more than an event—it was a journey of faith, formation, and friendship. Rooted in the Salesian charism and inspired by the call to “Do whatever He tells you,” the camp empowered young people to become believers who are truly free to serve, carrying hope and positive transformation into their communities.
