From the 24th to the 30th of August 2025, the Salesians of Don Bosco from the Africa of the Great Lakes Province (AGL) came together in Namugongo–Kyoto, Uganda, for their annual retreat in English. It brought together confreres from Rwanda and Uganda and Caritas sisters of Jesus. It was animated by Rev. Fr. John Musonda, SDB, from the ZMB Province, under the inspiring theme: “Drawn into God’s Communion.”
Fr. Musonda reminded us that the Salesian vocation is sustained not by activities or strategies but by deep communion with God. A Salesian, he emphasized, is first a man of God before being a man for the young.
One of the highlights of the retreat was the renewal of religious vows. Equally moving was the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where many confreres experienced God’s mercy Together, these moments allowed us to rediscover the joy of consecration and the strength that comes from God’s forgiveness,
The retreat was also a time of communion with the deceased confreres, especially those who generously served in Uganda and across the Province. Through prayers, and moments of remembrance, the participants expressed gratitude for their witness of faith and sacrifice. Their memory continues to inspire and challenge today’s Salesians to live their mission with the same generosity and fidelity.
Fraternal life was another strong feature of the retreat. Coming from different countries and diverse communities, the Salesians experienced anew the joy of living together in faith and mission. Conversations, shared meals, fraternal encounters and prayer made Don Bosco’s family spirit come alive. The retreat strengthened not only individual vocations but also the unity of the entire Province. It was a moment of grace, a time of renewal, reconciliation, and recommitment, spiritual refreshment and union with God and with one another.
